Dry winds to halt rain in Delhi, temperature may hit 40 degree Celsius by weekend | Delhi News – Times of India

The weather is again likely to turn dry from June 21 onwards

NEW DELHI: With Delhi not receiving any pre-monsoon showers on Monday, maximum temperature in the city increased by over two degrees. However, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday when light rain is likely to hit the national capital.
According to IMD, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 32.8 degrees Celsius on Monday, six notches below the season’s average. A day earlier, it was 30.7 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 23.6 degrees Celsius, five notches below the season’s average. On Sunday, it was 24.5 degrees Celsius.
The humidity levels oscillated between 61% and 80% on Monday.
According to the weather department, the maximum and minimum temperatures on Tuesday are likely to hover around 32 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively. The weather is again likely to turn dry from June 21 onwards.
“The current easterly component of the wind direction in the city is set to change to westerly, which are dry and warm winds, from June 21. The maximum temperature may touch 40 degrees Celsius by June 26-27, which is also the average or normal date when the arrival of south-west monsoon is expected in Delhi. If prolonged, the westerly winds may also delay the onset of the monsoon,” explained Mahesh Palawat, vice-chairman, meteorology and climate change, Skymet.
Meanwhile, the air quality deteriorated from ‘satisfactory’ to ‘moderate’ category. The air quality index (AQI) on Monday was 124 as against 99 a day earlier. “The AQI today indicates ‘lower end of moderate’ air quality with PM10 as the primary pollutant. Dust contributes around 61% to PM10. For the next three days (21st, 22nd, 23rd), peak wind speed is likely to be 15-18 km/h causing moderate dispersion and the AQI is likely to be within ‘moderate’ or ‘upper end of satisfactory’,” said a statement from SAFAR.
